Dependence of Atmospheric Temperature Trends : Climate Models vs Observation
نویسندگان
چکیده
As a consequence of greenhouse forcing, all state-of-the-art general circulation models predict a positive temperature trend that is greater for the troposphere than the surface. This predicted positive trend increases in value with altitude until it reaches a maximum ratio with respect to the surface of as much as 1.5 to 2.0 at about 200-400 hPa. However, the temperature trends from several independent observational data sets show decreasing as well as mostly negative values. This disparity indicates that the three models examined here fail to account for the effects of greenhouse forcings. *corresponding author. [email protected]

The contribution of ozone to future stratospheric temperature trends
The projected recovery of ozone from the effects of ozone depleting substances this century will modulate the stratospheric cooling due to CO2, thereby affecting the detection and attribution of stratospheric temperature trends. Here the impact of future ozone changes on stratospheric temperatures is quantified for three representative concentration pathways (RCPs) using simulations from the Fi...
متن کامل“ Projecting North American Climate Over the Next 50 Years : Uncertainty due to Internal Variability ”
This study highlights the relative importance of internally-generated vs. externally-forced climate trends over the next 50 years (2010-2060) at local and regional scales over North America in two global coupled model ensembles. Both ensembles contain large numbers of integrations (17 and 40), each of which is subject to identical anthropogenic radiative forcing (e.g., greenhouse gas increase) ...
متن کاملObservational evidence of sensitivity of surface climate changes to land types and urbanization
Sensitivity of surface climate change to land types is investigated for the Northern Hemisphere by subtracting the reanalysis from the observed surface temperature (observation minus reanalysis). The basis of this approach is that while reanalysis represents the large-scale climate changes due to greenhouse gases and atmospheric circulation, it is less sensitive to regional surface processes as...
متن کاملThe Relation among Sea Ice, Surface Temperature, and Atmospheric Circulation in Simulations of Future Climate
Observations document substantial 20-40 year trends in the past several decades in the Arctic. Studies show sea ice thickness and extent have declined, air temperature has increased, and the temperature and salinity of the upper ocean have increased (e.g., see Serreze et al., 2000). At the same time, we have seen a weakening of the tropospheric anticyclone over the Beaufort Sea that can be asso...
متن کاملPrecise monitoring of global temperature trends from satellites.
Passive microwave radiometry from satellites provides more precise atmospheric temperature information than that obtained from the relatively sparse distribution of thermometers over the earth's surface. Accurate global atmospheric temperature estimates are needed for detection of possible greenhouse warming, evaluation of computer models of climate change, and for understanding important facto...
